If you’ve ever had the pleasure of diving into a box of old costume jewelry, you probably noticed an animal or two in there! Once my heartbeat slowed to a normal pace, I began to separate the jewelry into categories that made sense to my 7-year-old mind. Sure, I could have put all the bracelets in one pile, and the necklaces in another, but there were much more interesting sub-categories to work with, such as ‘bright orange’ and ‘animals’. It was the animal-shaped jewelry that interested me most. There was a gold poodle ‘wearing’ a jewelled collar brooch, a sparkling snake wrap bracelet, tiny crab-shaped earrings from the shore. To this day, I treasure these pieces dearly, and I couldn’t have been more excited than when we discovered some stunning new pieces for our store that are a modern-day version of my animal heirlooms.
